Our Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our online store!

Husband and wife artist duo have created Weathered Hands to share our passion of rocks, clay, and earthly crafts here in the Western States.

Cory started rockhounding a few years ago, researching through old books on where to dig and what minerals are found in this area. He then joined a few mineral clubs here in Colorado to further educate himself as well as to share his passion with those that have been doing this for a life time. Over the years, he has not only learned a great deal about minerals but the stories and livelihood of those that would mine or rockhound all over the world.

Summertime is the best season to rock hound due to the ground being soft and any snow melt causing crystals and rocks to weather out of their pockets that they are formed in. When the season is over is when the cutting begins. Winter is when he spends his time indoors creating these unique pieces, using cabbing machines and lapidary tools to cut and polish the stones. He uses sterling silver to either hand wrap or metalsmith a backing for the stone to sit in, not only elevating the stones natural design, but providing a durable material that is strong yet lightweight.

“ When I am creating a new pendant, not only am I trying to capture the story of each particular stone, I hand wire wrap them to make each pendant a one of a kind piece. Making pendants started out as a way to make jewelry for my wife, which then lead to wanting to gift to family and friends. Now I am ready to share my passion with you and with your family and friends!” - Cory

Maggie has accompanied Cory on many rockhounding adventures and got into clay when they started their business. Polymer clay is surprisingly lightweight and durable (although it should still  be handled with care). Her earrings vary in styles, being inspired by nature, rockhounding trips and just an everyday simple look. She then took a pottery class over the summer and fell even more in love with clay, now having a small studio at home of her own to create ceramic pieces whenever! On their rockhounding adventures, they will occasionally take a side trip to forage for mushrooms. This has been a new hobby of Maggie’s and she has been able to create small domes encasing her perception of what it is like to be up close into the world of mushrooms and forest creatures.

“I’ve really enjoyed making clay earrings along with my many other crafts. I started out by wanting to make something for myself and family and now I am hooked on making more. I love this new artistic adventure and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.” - Maggie

Most minerals that are being self collected are from Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and Utah. However, you never know where we may travel next to discover more to showcase here.
